Dr. John M. Gottman is Professor Emeritus of psychology at the University of Washington and is known worldwide for his groundbreaking work on relationships using scientific observation and analysis. In 2007 Dr. John Gottman was recognized as one of the top ten most influential psychologists of the past 25 years by Psychotherapy Networker. He has also earned numerous other professional awards. Dr. John Gottman has 190 professional journal article publications to his credit. He has also written 40 books on relationship improvement. His wife, Dr. Julie S. Gottman, a clinical psychologist, has written books for clinicians and families. She has written or co-authored numerous programs to strengthen marriages and families. Dr. Julie Gottman was voted Washington State Psychologist of the Year.

Drs. John and Julie Gottman founded the Gottman Institute in Seattle, Washington to bring help to couples and to train therapists to be more effective as relationship counselors. Gottman couples therapy is based on Dr. John Gottman’s 40+ years of scientific research into the nature of relationships and Dr. Julie Gottman’s clinical insight and expertise. Gottman Couples Therapy was developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman to apply the insights gained from their research to the task of helping couples. The approach is a practical one that couples can immediately relate to and apply to their relationship. It is a form of couples therapy that makes sense. Dr. Don Cole and Carrie Cole are Master Trainers and Consultants for The Gottman Institute and train counselors in all levels of Gottman Method therapy. Experienced licensed therapists must attend three levels of training and a period of consultation with a Senior Gottman Therapist before they can apply for certification in the Gottman Institute.
